Highland gymnasts

The gymnasts from Highland High School participated in their first meet of the season Jan. 18, the Ron Ganim Invitational at Brecksville High School.

The Highland High School gymnasts had a great first meet at the Ron Ganim Invitational at Brecksville High School.

The only veteran gymnast, senior Mackenzie Yu, competed her first all around meet since suffering a complete ACL rupture at the Suburban League meet last January.

“I was a little nervous leading up to the meet, but I wanted to just go out there and do my best,” Yu said. “We have a lot of young talent on our team, and I think we all had fun representing Highland.”

The top six scorers on each event placed, so Mackenzie’s tie for seventh place on bars fell short of a medal, “But there is always the Suburban League Meet in a couple weeks,” Yu said.

The three newest members of the team are all freshmen: Ava Noonan competed very clean and solid routines; Jenna Pennington placed fifth on vault (9.15) and 10th all around; and Paige Yu finished sixth all around, second on vault (9.4), and was the floor exercise champion (9.35).

“I was really proud of each of the girls and can’t wait to see what is in store for them this season,” said Coach Jen Lewis.
