Sharon Township's first fire truck, a 1950 Chevrolet, is to be restored for use at funerals and community events.

The first Sharon Township fire truck, a 1950 Chevrolet, which was purchased by trustees more than 60 years ago and sold after 36 years of service, was reacquired by the Sharon Township Firefighters' Association in June 2010. It will be restored to its original condition and will be used to carry fallen firefighters, emergency medical technicians, law enforcement officers and members of the military to their final resting place.

It looked like Christmas in May as approximately 250 fifth-graders from Sharon, Granger, and Hinckley Elementary schools, all wearing green D.A.R.E. shirts, and the high school D.A.R.E. role models, wearing red shirts, filled the Highland Middle School gymnasium May 2 for the D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony. They had reason to celebrate after having successfully completed a 10-week core curriculum course in Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The seats in the bleachers were packed with onlookers.

Plans for the first-ever Safety Town at Windfall School, 4691 Windfall Road, are well underway. The program, which is being developed specifically for children with special needs from kindergarten age through third grade, will take place July 23 through 27 from 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the school gymnasium with some outdoor activities, weather permitting.

GRANGER TWP. - Last May, Daniel Gold, 16, and Brett Barber, 15, visited a member of Daniel's family in Mansfield to help him with some work on his farm, not knowing that they would later be recognized as heroes in their hometown after rescuing the man from his overturned tractor. These Highland High School students were among those recognized at the American Red Cross of Medina County's 10th annual Heartland Heroes Celebration held May 6 in the ballroom of Weymouth Country Club in Medina Township.

April 24 - A 17-year-old Hinckley boy was allegedly caught trying to shoplift a can of Arnold Palmer Lite Half & Half Iced Tea Lemonade from a gas station on state Route 18. The assistant manager claims this is the second time the boy has been caught trying to steal from that store. The previous time he was given a warning, but the manager wished to press charges this time. The matter was forwarded to the juvenile prosecutor's office for consideration. May 2 - Shortly after 8:30 a.m., a 17-year-old Medina girl was driving on Boneta Road when she reportedly ran off the right side of the roadway into the gravel, over corrected the mistake and ran off the left side of the road. While attempting to regain control of the vehicle, the left rear tire blew out, causing the vehicle to come to rest in the ditch on the west side of the road. The accident was allegedly caused by driver inattention.

HINCKLEY TWP. - A series of four daytime home burglaries in the township within four weeks has led to Hinckley Police Chief Tim Kalavsky issuing a request for residents to take extra steps to be vigilant about home safety and asking residents to "keep their eyes and ears open."

April 13 - A 50-year-old Sharon Township woman called the sheriff because her son was acting unruly. The 14-year-old boy was home because he had been suspended from school. During an argument, he allegedly broke a water bottle and threw a deodorant stick at the ceiling. When the mother called the sheriff's office, he rode away from home on his dirt bike.

Within the last several weeks, researchers from gas and oil companies have made the county's Probate Court a stop in their research, requesting records and increasing activity at the court. They are hired by the companies to research properties that could be leased for drilling.

A $40,000 grant from the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services is allowing the sheriff's department to periodically put more cruisers on the road to do traffic patrol to ticket speeders, impaired drivers and drivers not wearing a seat belt.

VALLEY CITY - It has been more than 65 years since Roland Modisett of Medina served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was slated to receive the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Campaign Medal with one bronze star, the Philippine Liberation Medal, a Combat Action ribbon, the WWII Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Good Conduct Medal. However, he never received them until April 26 of this year, when he and 11 other Medina County veterans, most of whom had never received the medals they had earned, were finally honored for their service during a ceremony at the VFW Post in Valley City.
