Six school records were broken by Medina's swimming and diving programs Feb. 17 during the Northeast Division I Districts at Cleveland State University.

Although the Bees did not qualify anyone from Robert F. Busbey Natatorium to the state meet, Maddie Miller, Carolyn Yurkoski and Sami Petruzzi led the way for the girls team with multiple new marks and Kyle Grigsby set the lone boys record.

Miller had two individual personal bests and was part of a relay record. The senior improved the school's times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.19) and 500 free (5:18.36) as she placed 13th and ninth, respectively, in her open events.

Miller also teamed with junior Tess Fanello and sophomores Petruzzi and Yurkoski for 12th in the 400 free relay (3:43.39).

They also were part of the 200 free relay that finished 13th (1:42.52).

Petruzzi broke the 100 butterfly record when she placed 17th in 1:00.99, while Yurkoski dropped the 50 free time to 25.27 by finishing 20th.

Grigsby, a senior, improved the boys 500 free time to 4:55.05 when he placed seventh. He also was 23rd for the fly (56.11).

The top two placers for each swimming event earned automatic bids to C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, while at-large bids were given to the next 11 boys and 16 girls times across Ohio, according to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Web site.

Other Medina girls representing the school at districts and helping the team to 22nd place were senior diver Hailey Wetta (29th, 126 points), Fanello in the 50 free (38th, 25.91) and 100 free (25th, 55.85), sophomore Sarah Cuppett in the 100 breast (34th, 1:13.45) and junior Abby Kriak in the 500 free (44th, 5:37.75).

Boys who competed for the Bees at CSU and pushed them to 23rd in the team standings were junior Tim Varrelmann in the 100 free (13th, 48.83) and 200 free (1:47.73), plus senior Alexander Davis in the 100 breaststroke (24th, 1:04.17).
