The price to mail a letter is set to increase by 3 cents

To the Editor:

So is everyone aware that the price to mail a letter is set to increase by three cents?

What you may not be aware of are the reasons underlying this rate increase.

Unsurprisingly, the reason that the post office has to keep raising rates is all political; it is because Republicans in Congress wish to destroy it! After all, so goes their thinking; why is it that Grandma cannot simply FedEx cookies to her newest granddaughter? Rather than mailing them through that stodgy old post office? Such would get the job done and support American private enterprise at the same time!

In keeping with this unspoken desire, back in 2006, congressional Republicans rammed through a law requiring the post office to pre-fund its pension obligations for the next 75 years, an understandably onerous task which no other federal agency nor private business is asked to do! This – make no mistake – is the slow poison which is killing off your friendly neighborhood letter carrier, everyone!

Consider the nearly criminal dysfunction which has gripped Congress in recent years, Dan...combine that with the news networks desire to present Positive, Uplifting stories (because viewers are more likely to stay tuned to news which leaves them feeling Good about themselves & the state of the country, as opposed to that which leaves them feeling as if the situation in Washington is all but Hopeless), and can you understand why the mainstream media spun the post office story as a great bipartisan success, sir? After all, Dan; one can say ANYTHING & Appear to justify it with the right data set, the correct slew of numbers! Such is why it has often been said that there are three degrees to lying, Mr. MacPherson: Lies, Damn Lies, & Statistics...[beam]

This is merely my opinion, mind you; but the congressional compromise over the post office is another indication of how far our Politics have fallen in recent years, sir; that when the two parties are actually able to Work Together on an issue for the good of the country (which is ostensibly, ya know, THEIR JOB), such is held up & bandied about as if to proclaim: "SEE? We CAN talk to each other to get stuff done IF WE WANT TO!"

Frankly, Dan; I used to aspire to run for congress myself one day, Dan, but if this partisan circus continues...I don't know anymore

It seems to me it was presented by the press as a great bipartisan accomplishment that would bolster the pension fund for years to come. This was done in the light that so many pension were going broke as there are more people on pension then people paying into it.
