Sister-to-Sister summit stresses 'one size does not fit all'

The Medina County Branch of the American Association of University Women and partnering area service organizations will host the 13th Sister-to-Sister Girls' Summit, a forum for girls ages 11 to 14, at Medina Hospital Sunday, March 18 from noon to 4:30 p.m.

This year's theme, "One Size Does Not Fit All," will focus on ways girls can be active, fit and comfortable in their own personas without trying to imitate media-inspired models.

Opening the program will be special guest Betsy Kling, WKYC-TV3 chief meterologist. Presenters for the afternoon are Kim Summers, health education specialist at the Medina County Health Department, and team members of Cleveland Clinic's "Let's Move It" campaign.

Summers will address nutrition and activities that will energize and help teens perform in their school and social lives. She has been an education leader in Medina and Akron is a member of the Share Cluster that promotes non-violent, drug free living for teens.

Cleveland Clinic's "Let's Move It" campaign has its own Web site that stresses the importance of physical activity and an outreach team that appears throughout the area. It will demonstrate and teach the "Let's Move It" dance.

Attendees will participate in hands-on activities and develop plans of action in "chat room" discussions with members of the planning committee and teen facilitators. Teen facilitators represent Buckeye, Cloverleaf, Medina, Wadsworth, Norton and Holy Name high schools. They are leaders in their respective schools and, as active members of the committee, have received special training for their roles in the program.

There is no cost for the event, but registration is required. The event includes snacks, beverages and pizza, T-shirts and program handouts.

A Parent-to-Parent session relating to the theme will be held concurrently in an adjoining room from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. for interested parents. Presenters from the girls' session will give an overview of their materials and discuss how parents can help their daughters develop healthy, happy and positive minds, bodies and spirits.

Registration forms are available at participating agencies, including Medina County libraries, Medina Hospital, Cornerstone Wellness Services and the Ohio State University Extension Office. Space is limited: registrations will be accepted through March 2.

Sister-to-Sister is a national dialogue for girls initiated by the AAUW to help understand the concerns of the nation's young women and how these concerns affect their educational experiences. It provides an opportunity to network with girls from other schools and learn from older role models in a non-threatening atmosphere. Medina's Sister-to-Sister Girls' Summit, one of the longest running programs of its kind in the country, is now in its 13th year of providing programming for girls and has involved more than 650 young women participants.

For more information contact co-chairs Cindy McQuown at 330-722-4166 and Diane Dockrill at 330-723-9600, ext. 250, or registrar Pam Brewer at 330-554-8844.

Participating organizations include American Association Of University Women/Medina County Branch; Cornerstone Wellness Inc.; Medina County District Library; Medina Hospital; Medina County Health Department; Ohio State University Extension - 4-H; Solutions Behavioral Healthcare, Inc.; and Zonta Club ABC.
