Audrey C. Winchell
Audrey C. Winchell, 89, of Rittman, passed away July 9, 2019, at the Apostolic Christian Home following a period of declining health.Audrey was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Fort Gay, W.Va., to Frederick and Estella (née Hodge) Massie and graduated from Rittman High School with the class of 1964. She married Homer Johnson in 1946 and he passed away three years later due to complications from contracting malaria while in the military. On Sept. 2, 1950, she married Vernon L. Winchell in Rittman and they were happily married for over 66 years until his death Jan. 6, 2017. She worked for PCA for two years and then as a payroll clerk for PPG for 22 years, retiring in 1988.
Audrey was a member of the Rittman United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women-Hannah Circle, Rittman Board of Elections and Rittman Senior Citizens and was a Sunday school teacher for 35 years. She enjoyed crafting, quilting, going to ballgames, canning, gardening, traveling, playing euchre with family and going to the Moose every Wednesday to play cards with her friends. Audrey was the sweetest and most loved friend to many and was the beloved “Aunt Audrey” to many of her family members.She is survived by son, V. Lee, and favorite daughter-in-law, Betty Winchell, of Rittman; grandchildren, Jason (Dara) Winchell, of Copley, Lisa Winchell, of Rittman, and Ryan (Amber) Beckett, of Wadsworth; great-grandchildren, Julia and Damon Winchell, of Copley, Ryan Beckett Jr., of Delware, and Cheyene Beckett, of Ohio; brother-in-law, Duane Ryland, of Rittman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon L. Winchell; daughter, Phyllis J. Beckett; son-in-law, Herman; infant son, Laurence Johnson; infant grandson, Scot Beckett; brothers, Cabell Burgess (Della) Massie, Lloyd (Janie) Massie, Charles (Hannah) Massie and Frederick James (Loretta) Massie Jr.; sisters, Maxine (Cecil) Pelfrey, Vivian Clotine (Herman) Meredith, Ardith (Merle) Boyes, Revel (William) Lemmon and Bertha; brothers-in-law, Okey Perry and Ryland; and four half-siblings.
