CHIPPEWA TWP. - The trustees are doing everything they can to get a section of Pleasant Home Road reopened, they said during the May 9 meeting.

Tax credit rollback goes back to table

RITTMAN - The ordinance to cap the tax credit the city grants for tax paid to other communities came off the table May 14 only long enough to get a third reading and then went back on.

Rickett takes over as new mayor's court magistrate

WEST SALEM - The village has a new magistrate for the mayor's court.

The village council greeted Magistrate Bill Rickett, a retired Wayne County Municipal Court judge, at the May 9 meeting.

A statue stands at Zion

Jesus is standing at the corner of Clinton Street and Park Drive in Doylestown. Or rather a statue of Jesus is standing there in front of Zion Lutheran Church. A wood sculpture actually. The life-size likeness is new.

Charity Classic continues

The first annual Appalachia Service Project Golf Classic was held in May of 2011. It's time for the sequel.

The 2012 ASP Charity Golf Classic is scheduled for Saturday, May 19 at Chippewa Golf Course. According to Pastor Dale Warrick, the event "helps create awareness of the continued need for proper housing in the Appalachian area."

Books can help teach basics of hobby farming

Wayne County is one of the most agricultural areas in the state so it is natural that there are a number of hobby farmers to complement the many larger farms in the area. In my little area of the county three neighbors are vegetable and flower gardeners, one raises alpacas and I tend a flock of chickens. One farmer raises the wonderful tasting beef cattle which fills my freezer and another is the local strawberry mecca. The local libraries have many books for these passions.

Booster club golf outing June 9

The Rittman All Sports Booster Club will hold its 2012 Golf Outing Saturday, June 9 at Ridge Top Golf Course, 7441 Tower Road, Medina. The four-person modified shotgun scramble begins at 8 a.m. Cost is $260 per team and cash prizes go to the top team, as well as prizes for the longest drive and closest to the hold. Brinn Leigh Cotton was born April 19, 2012 to Kari and Justin Cotton of Creston. She weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 18 inches long. Her brothers and sisters include Mackenzie, 13, Grady, 3, and Kaleigh, 17 months.

MOST mentors move on

The Hazel Harvey Elementary School has had a mentoring program for the last twelve years to help students improve their reading. It is called MOST, which stands for Mentoring Our Students Together. It started as a grant-funded program, but the grant has long since run out. Now, the school board funds it locally.

Wayne Rail Trails

The Wayne County Rails to Trails organization held their annual meeting at Heartland Point in Orrville April 26. The group chose Orrville for their meeting because the next trail to be built in Wayne County will be the segment of the Ohio to Erie Trail that will connect Orrville with Clinton.
