Donald “Dean” Schempp, 88, of Lodi, went to be with the Lord Jan. 12, 2020, after three years of declining health.

Dean was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Chatham to Gerald and Cleo (née Findlay) Schempp. He was the first of four children. He graduated from Homer School with the class of 1949 and served his country for four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Dean married Esther Wuthrich in 1950. God blessed them with 69 years of marriage Dec. 28, 2019. Dean was a member of the Black River Church of the Brethren and a lifetime member of the Lodi American Legion Post 523. He worked as a typesetter for Ohio Farmers Insurance Co. and Ace Typesetting and later retired from the Lodi Water and Sewer Department. Dean was very active in the village of Lodi serving, as chief of police and village councilman and was instrumental in organizing the 3L Little League. Dean enjoyed all sports, especially Ohio State football and the Cleveland Indians. He could always be found cheering on his son, and later his granddaughter, at their baseball and basketball games.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; children, Kathi (Mike) Jones and Gary (Eileen) Schempp, of West Salem; grandchildren, David (Vanessa) Jones. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Crystal Schempp, of Lodi; great-granddaughters, Kiley Jones and Alexia Schempp; nieces, Terrie (Buck) Grimm, Dee Binkley, Carol (Mike) Cottrel, Debbie Atwood and Janet Schempp; nephews, Davey Schempp, Rick (Terri) Schempp, Jim (JoAnne) Atwood and Jeff Bryant; aunt, Margaret Walker, who is 101 years old; and cousin, JoAnn (Dale) Bower.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Duane; and sisters, Arlene Bryant and Marilyn Binkley.

Parker Funeral Home handled arrangements.
