Wadsworth Mayor Robin Laubaugh

The Soprema Senior Center's sixth annual Walking Challenge took place during the months of May and June. Record-breaking numbers were reported with 102 senior participants walking a total 15,668 miles.

New this year was a Biking Challenge with nine participants riding a total of 1,968 miles. I attended the Walking Challenge Celebration July 20 at Memorial Park, where I heard many stories from individuals who had set goals for themselves and achieved them!

Others talked about how much fun and how encouraging it was to be part of the challenge. In fact, many of the walkers have set higher goals for themselves for next year and will be inviting more friends to join in. What a great way to stay healthy! Thank you, campus partners Wadsworth YMCA and SUMMA Therapy, and Professional Friends, for help with prizes and refreshments.

Attorney General Warning

The Attorney General’s office is warning potential donors of a scam involving the “Help the Vets” organization, who have also operated under other names including American Disabled Veterans Foundation and Military Families of America. This group has been accused of using less than five percent of the $11 million donations collected from Ohio and other states between 2013 and 2016 on charitable programs.

The organization has been ordered to stop soliciting donations and to release the remaining funds, which will be distributed to other charities. Ohio Attorney General DeWine said that “there are many legitimate organizations in Ohio and across the United States that do great work to help veterans and service members.” He is recommending that individuals do not rely on a group’s name alone when considering a donation, as many have real-sounding names.

Instead, they should research charities using the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to confirm their legitimacy. He added that some calls come from for-profit companies who are paid to collect donations and who must divulge, if asked, how much of a donation actually goes to the charity. They must also identify themselves. Suspected fraud should be reported to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov or 800-282-0515.

Until next week …
